Perimenopause and menopause are natural stages of life for those of us lucky to live this long
I have an unusual relationship with it (having longed for menopause since my early 20s when surgery for endometriosis didn’t offer the pain relief I’d hoped for) and am happier now than I’ve ever been in terms of knowing myself better, what works and doesn’t work and generally feeling more embodied and at ease.
This doesn’t mean it’s without its challenges.
You’re probably reading this page because you’re struggling with brain fog, anxiety, sleep issues, hot flashes, joint pain, irregular bleeds and erratic moods?
You’re not alone!
While some people sail through menopause, others struggle enormously
Things I thought I’d sorted decades ago (eg, sleep) have flared up. Other symptoms can be delightful (not worrying about pregnancy or having to deal with incredibly painful periods while always somehow imagining that other women ARE out wearing white jeans, rollerblading and having adventures like the old ads used to show.)
Even though I’ve been immersed in this work for decades, I initially (and sometimes still do – progress not perfection) resisted my body’s changing needs.
But by deepening so many of my self and Self care practices (and finally getting better at giving myself the rest I need so much more of now – progress not perfection) I’ve become better at navigating this move from cyclic living (with monthly cycles) to, as the delightful Dr Karen Ward described it, more of a straight line.
Yes, during perimenopause, I often felt that if it weren’t for my daily yoga and meditation I’d be homicidal.
Months between bleeds sometimes had me feeling the angst of PMS for months instead of just a couple of days.
I sometimes used that rage to positive effect (standing up for myself and others where, as a much younger woman, I could never have been that assertive).
Then there’d be the months where I bled for three months straight.
I’m possibly sharing WAY too much information here but half the population goes through this if, again, we’re lucky enough to live so long.
The more we shine a light on whatever’s coming up for healing with perimenopause and menopause, the easier it is to navigate
I’d love to help you whether you’re struggling with:
- anxiety
- sleep
- boundaries and assertiveness (use that rage for GOOD)
- giving yourself permission to prioritise yourself and find your own purpose, meaning and joy as, for many women, family responsibilities change too
- step into the power and confidence you deserve to embody
- prioritise rest and remember that we not only can’t do all the things but we don’t have to
- looking at whatever might be emerging for you at a transpersonal (beyond the person) level
Would you like to befriend your body, hormones and whole Self? Even thought you’ve been conditioned to believe that your worthiness is behind you? The best can be yet to come!
‘I also value that the group is run by an experienced therapist whose qualifications, professional registrations and congruence I respect and feel trust in. I like to feel I’m in safe hands. I have greater awareness of my inner critic/expectations of self and consequently more likely to ease off the pressure on myself. Greater acceptance of where I am at life stage as a woman with fluctuating hormones and difficulties with perimenopausal symptoms.’

While I wasn’t even in perimenopause when writing 365 Ways to Feel Better: Self-care Ideas for Embodied Wellbeing, prioritising rest and self and Self care is ESPECIALLY helpful for perimenopause and menopause symptoms.
