We’ll be working more with inspiration as we move into the third eye chakra in a few weeks but even before then, you KNOW when you’re excited, energised and enthusiastic about whatever you’re sharing and when you’re going through the motions

I joined Suzy Walker’s Heart Leap Writing Hour for the first time in weeks the other day. Not only was it its usual lovely practice, all of us writing together in silence (body doubling can be especially helpful for ADHDers when it comes to focus and staying on task), but the mini share beforehand had people exploring what we put out there AND what we actually want and expect (often much LESS than creators think they have to… churn out).
Whether you’re finding your voice (in any creative endeavour) or very experienced and still struggling with rejection sensitivity, how can you make it easier for yourself?
Therapy pioneer, Donald Winnicott (who coined the phrase “good enough mother” back when mothers were almost always the primary care giver) noted that babies and toddlers who were securely attached to their (again, this was several decades ago) mothers were able to be more creative (in the babies’ cases, this meant making little gurgling noises etc) than the ones who were less secure.
Whatever kind of childhood and earlier adulthood you’ve survived, how can you create as much safety and space for your creative self NOW as you can?
In Big Magic and her TED Talk, bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert famously talked about promising her writing that she’d never depend on it for money. She didn’t want to put that kind of pressure on her creativity so continued working other jobs while writing several of her earliest books.
What helps you feel [I deleted most here because who needs that kind of pressure?] inspired and creative when:
- Reading or making up bedtime stories for your toddler?
- Designing workshops?
- Writing your Substack?
- Creating social media and other content as an entrepreneur?
- Writing your book/s? (Yes. I’m actively working on two books with a third I’ve not yet fully given up on. And I’m no longer shaming myself about my lack of focus and instead reminding myself that my birthday twin, Mark Twain, used to work on several books at a time moving from one to another depending on what he had most enthusiasm for that day)
- Making music?
- Using your body to express yourself through dance or anything else?
- Rearranging furniture or decorating your living space?
- Any other way in which you express yourself and your Self?
How does your relationship to creativity change when you remind yourself that only you CAN express what you choose to express in your unique way? That there’s no wrong way?
How might you make more space for what best-selling author Nick Williams calls, “best thinking”? Listen to our interview here:

Support your nervous system
As with so much in life, our nervous systems are trying to help us when we learn to listen. Those feelings of stress, anxiety, excitement, burnout and everything else are information for us. We know from Polyvagal Theory that our tone of voice has an enormous impact on how safe we feel (find out more about Cat Coaching – the way I sorted my own self talk more than I ever had managed before) and how creative we let ourselves be.
