Are you ready to dust off old forgotten dreams? Some inspiration from Space Cadet
If you’re ready to dust off your dreams, Space Cadet on Prime might be a delightful inspiration for you. It’s the latest in the series of Sofa Session posts. These Sofa Sessions, formerly known as Couch Coaching, are a way of recognising that everything we watch, listen to, and read can impact our mood, mental health, emotional health and motivation.
I love watching things that inspire me and Space Cadet is my new favourite. It’s a gorgeous film in the vein of Legally Blonde. Just as I wish Legally Blonde 2 were available everywhere to encourage voter registration, Space Cadet is wonderful if you’ve felt derailed in any way and think it’s too late to dust off your dreams.
In the film, Emma Roberts plays Rex, who grew up wanting to be an astronaut. She and her mother used to watch spaceships take off at NASA. Sadly, her mother died just when Rex was about to go to university on a scholarship. We meet her 10 years later, where her dreams have been completely derailed.
She’s getting by but feeling down about herself. She submits a brutally honest application to NASA when she finds out they’re recruiting. Things get taken out of her hands and she ends up in the space programme.
Rex challenges herself enormously to get back on track. She was top of her class in school and collaborates with a friend who isn’t good at the fitness element of the training.
The lack of gravity makes fitness very important and they support each other in catching up with the academics and fitness. Rex’s skill set, honed over many years, emphasises friendship and collaborating.
I don’t want to give anything away but I encourage you not to write it off if you enjoy silly yet heartwarming films and need a boost.
If you’re thinking about something you longed to do when you were little or even just a year ago, and life threw a curveball, it’s never too late to reassess.
Reassessing your goals and dreams, thinking about what once brought you purpose, meaning, and joy, can help you reconfigure your identity. Start making those little tweaks and changes to your daily habits and behaviours to make it more likely that if and when such opportunities arise, you’re able to take them.
In Space Cadet, you’ll see that the premise of the film involves no dishonesty on Rex’s part – at the beginning at least.
I hope you enjoy it, and I hope that whatever you’re watching, reading, or listening to, you choose what nourishes you. It’s just as important as what we eat and drink. Look after yourself, and I look forward to sharing more soon.
le grá,
